Pen Tool / Bézier Curves Intro
Instructor: Ray Robillard

In this class, I’ll teach you how to work with this wonderful tool! It’s not an easy tool to work with at first, I’ll grant you that, but with lots of practice and exercises, it will become easier. We’ll start with basic shapes and work our way through more complex stuff. Curves are handy to work with to put text on a path, to make precise selections, to draw illustrations, and many other uses. They’re also used in web animation software like Corel R.A.V.E. to create an animation path for objects.

My software of choice are CorelDraw 12 and Photoshop 7, on the Windows platform. But that doesn’t mean Mac or Windows’ Illustrator, Canvas, Freehand or Zoner Draw users can’t take this class. The Pen tool is present in a variety of software and acts more or less the same way in all of them. Users from other software will definitely benefit from taking this class. However, note that I’m unable to provide help in software other than CorelDraw and Photoshop. But if you can already find the Pen tool (or Bézier curves) in your software, then there’s no need to worry! For Zoner Draw 4 users, I can provide some help and screen shots if necessary.

This class requires that you have a solid understanding of your graphics software. If you do not feel comfortable with your current graphic software, you might first consider taking other classes offered at the Eclectic Academy. We won’t have the time to go over the basics of these programs.

You are encouraged to post your results on the web. For this, you’ll need space on the web. Make sure you have free space somewhere to do so. It’s assumed as well that you know the operating system running your computer (Windows or Mac) and that you know how to post pictures on the web. These topics will not be covered in this class.

Finally, this is not an art class. I will not teach how to draw, and you will be not judged on the artistic value of your homework. This class is strictly meant to learn how to use the tool. And by posting your homework, this will help me to check if you’ve succeeded or not.

Photoshop - Level I
Instructor: Donna Sellinger

Photoshop is the "Cadillac" of all graphics programs, It's the one used by professional graphic designers. It allows you to manipulate images, create amazing graphics with equally amazing effects.

Do you have an old photo that needs to be "fixed?" Is it faded, cracked, or otherwise damaged? Photoshop has the tools that can make that image almost better than new. You can even colorize your old black and white photo, or freshen up a faded one.

You can create your own graphics from scratch and with Photoshop's tools, do amazing things with them. So, the bottom line is you'll discover the treasure that is Photoshop. You'll learn about all the tools, how to use them – all the basics you need to get you up and running and starting to create your own wonderful images. There is a free 30 day trial version of Photoshop but, unfortunately, that's not long enough for this class. It's best to already have either Photoshop 6, 7, or CS in order to take this class.

Prerequisites:  Students must have working knowledge of their operating system, how to save and locate files, and how to unzip files.

Photoshop - Level 2
Instructor: Donna Sellinger

Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard image manipulation tool used for many tasks, from photo retouching to creating posters. One of the most versatile and powerful programs available to the designer, it is essential for a professional finish.

This is true not only because Photoshop is available on a wide array of platforms ranging from Mac to Windows to UNIX, but because after four generations of development, Adobe Photoshop has the most intuitive user interface, the most complete set of tools, and the largest number of reference books around.

We use Photoshop to color correct and sharpen scans. Photoshop gives us the ability to make great looking reproductions of not-so-great looking photographs. It lets us create whatever we want, from scratch and come out with amazing results.

The Intermediate class is designed to continue from the Beginning class and introduce you to more of the wonderful things you can do with this program. Armed with the knowledge of how the program works, you can now put that to use with more advanced skills.

Prerequisite: Beginning Photoshop

Photoshop Pizzazz
Instructor: Sara Froehlich

Think you need fancy and expensive third party filters to add dazzling special effects to your images? I have good news! Photoshop and Photoshop Elements ship with these “native filters”, but many new users aren't sure what to do with them. All you need is Photoshop or Elements (any version) and you can create fancy photo edges, 3D spheres, photo cubes or even a book, or make an image look like it is painted on a brick wall. How about giving a painting a painterly look? With these filters you will find you don't need expensive third party filters to create fantastic effects. Join me to out how to use them to give your graphics some pizzazz!

Note: This class was formerly called Photoshop Filters. If you have taken that class, you have already taken most of this one.

Prerequisites: Students should have any version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements installed and be familiar with basic operating system commands, and the basics of the program they plan on using for the course. You need to be familiar with working with photos, opening new images, saving images, and layers. Classes in Photoshop and Elements are both available as well. This course was written with Photoshop and there are some differences between programs, but most of the class can also be done with Elements, including version 4, as well.

More Photoshop Pizzazz
Instructor: Sara Froehlich

We will learn more special effects created in Photoshop without using any third party filters. This class is a sequel to Pizzazz! but it is not linear and may be taken before, after, or at the same time as the Pizzazz! class. In the first class I showed you all the filters and how to use them. This time we will use the filters for even more dazzling effects. Because I explained what the settings mean in the Pizzazz! class, this class will be written as tutorials. They will be step by step, and you will be able to follow them even if you have not taken the first class. Most of this class will work with Photoshop Elements, including version 4, as well as Photoshop CS.

Prerequisites: You must have a good working knowledge of Photoshop or Elements, and understand layers.

Photoshop Elements 3 or 4: Collages and Composites
Instructor: Sara Froehlich

Join me to use Photoshop Elements 3 or 4 to make textured paper, backgrounds, brushes, add photo edges, use layers, and of course, fade one image into another. We will work with blending modes and opacity, and learn to extract images from their backgrounds to be used in other images. By the end of the course you will be able to combine all of these skills into one of a kind collages and composites. Although this is not a scrapbooking class, the skills you learn here would be useful for that as well as collages and composites.

Prerequisites:
An understanding of your computer and operating system is required. You must know how to unzip a file and locate it and open it in Elements once you have unzipped it. You must understand the use of menus (File > Open, or any other command) and keyboard shortcuts. This means knowing how to use commands for your operating system, such as command + V means paste on the Mac and control + V means paste on the PC.

To post homework, you will have to be able to either build a simple webpage, use one of the free web hosts or photo gallery sites. Ideas for free or low cost web space can be found here: http://www.northlite.net/homework.htm If you are really new to web pages then I suggest one of the gallery sites like Yahoo Photos which is free or pbase (http://www.pbase.com) which is very reasonable. Neither of those options require you to know any html.

You will have to know how to use keyboard shortcuts and menus, as well as palettes, and be able to open, close, and save files. This is a level 2 class. If you need to learn the basics of the software, you should take PSE3: Get Up to Speed before taking this class (the same computer knowledge prerequisites apply to this class as well).

An understanding of layers is essential but they will be covered in detail.

You must have Photoshop Elements 3.0 or 4.0 installed. This class is written for PSE 3 and 4 as part of the Elements 3/4 series of classes. It would work with PSE 2 as long as the student is quite familiar with Elements 2, and understands that all commands and screenshots will be only from Elements 3.

Previous classes: You should take PSE3: Get Up to Speed, PSE 4: First Steps for Mac or PSE 4: First Steps for Windows before taking this class (the same computer knowledge prerequisites apply to this class as well). An understanding of layers and some more advanced concepts is absolutely essential to successful completion of the exercises in this course.

PSE 2 users: If you want to attempt this class using PSE 2, you must have completed at least Photoshop Elements from the Ground Up and Photoshop Elements Level 1.

Photoshop Elements 3 and 4: More Collages and Composites
Instructor: Sara Froehlich

This class picks up where the first Collages and Composites class left off. We’ll be working on shadows and lighting, more masking, photo edges, and more tricks and tips to make your collage and composites one of a kind. Although this is not a scrapbooking class, the skills you learn here would be useful for digital scrapbooking as well as for making collages and composites.

Prerequisites:
Because this is a Level 2 class, there are previous class requirements. The completion of the first collage class, Photoshop Elements 3 and 4: Composites and Collages, is absolutely required for this class.
You will have to know how to use keyboard shortcuts and menus, as well as palettes, and be able to open, close, and save files.
