Creating Your
Web Site
In order to show
your assignments to your instructors, you will need a place on the Internet where you can
post them. Here's how to get your own web site from Tripod. (*see note)
1. Go to www.tripod.com
2. You'll see the "Welcome to
Tripod" screen.
3. Click the "Sign Up" spot.
4. Choose a member name (*see
note) for yourself. Type it into the small window.
5. Choose a password and type it into the
small window. You will see asterisks -- ******** . These represent the letters of your
password.
6. Type your password a second time, to verify
that you typed it correctly (and remember to write it down someplace.)
7. Give yourself a hint, if you like. This can
be something like Wedding trip, if your password is Hawaii. Don't make it too obvious.
8. Fill in the rest of the form, as indicated
and click "Sign Me Up."
Notes:
- Getting a web page from other free servers will involve a
similar process.
- If you have chosen a name that somebody else has already
claimed, you'll have to choose another. Some alternatives are to add an initial, change
the spelling slightly, tack on a number - just change it in some way. When your member
name is unique, you will be allowed to continue.
You are now the owner of a Web Site.
Before you upload...
First you have to create the web page, document, or
images you want to upload. I use Netscape Composer to create my webpages. It's simple, the
code it creates is very clean and the documents are compact. You can also use MS Word, but
it's not as good. In Word, View your document as a Web Page, and then Save As an html
document. You can add text and images to either of these, just as you do when using Word.
If you want to upload via FTP (much faster and more
convenient) you will need to acquire an FTP program, such as Ipswitch's
WS-FTP. http://www.ipswitch.com/index.html.
There is a free limited edition version of this program, as well as a 30 day free trial of
the professional version.
To upload, using Tripod's filemanager.
1. Go to www.tripod.com
2. You will probably be
"recognized," but if you aren't, just click Log In, and type your member name
and password.
3. Along the top portion of the screen, you
will see several icons. Go straight to File Manager and click it. (Don't bother with the
Site Builder.)
4. At the top of the screen, you will again
see a row of buttons. Click the window that says, "Upload Via"
5. The window will open, and you will see two
options. Click "Single Files (8)"
6. A new screen will open. I recommend
clicking the Allow Overwrite option for your files.
7. On the File 1: window, click Browse...
8. In the small dialog box that opens, you
must locate the html document or the image (jpg or gif) that you want to upload to the
web. Finding it might be the hardest part.
9. You can upload up to 8 files at one time,
using Tripod's File Manager.
10. When you have selected all the files you
want to publish, click the Upload button. After they upload, you can click
"Close."
Your assignment will then be published to the
web.
Notify your instructor when your assignment is
posted. You must post a message to the discussion board with the URLs for each image you
want your instructor to look at. Here's how:
1. Go to your website. (This will
be your http://membername.tripod.com website. Notice, there is no www preceeding your url.)
2. You'll be looking at your index page.
Click on the html document, or the name of the image you want to share.
3. When the image has loaded, select the
page's address in the Location: window, at the top of your web browser. This is the URL,
the address, of that image, and when you click it one time, it will be highlighted, or
selected.
The Location bar in Netscape.
4. Copy the address to the clipboard by pressing
Ctrl-C. You won't SEE anything happen, but it worked.
5. Open your message. Click in the area where you
need to enter text.
6. Paste the URL into the message by typing Ctrl-V.
Repeat for any additional images you want to
share. People can go to your image by simply clicking these addresses.
7. Add anything you wish to your message, or
answer any assignment questions, and post it.
That's it. Your assignments are due one week
after the posting of each lesson, and we'll be looking forward to seeing them.
Note: Tripod really doesn't like you to upload images to a page, and then
link people directly to them. It can be done, of course, but they prefer you to create an
html page with links to the image.
