Product Description
The Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in for Adobe Photoshop has changed the way photographers work with images. Shooting in the raw format gives digital photographers complete control over every aspect of image quality. Camera Raw makes the process of using raw files easier by providing a standardized way of accessing and working with these uncompressed digital negatives. Today serious photographers shoot raw images only. Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop was the first book devoted exclusively to the topic, explaining the advantages and challenges of using Camera Raw to produce magnificent images. Real World Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop CS4 keeps pace with new directions in digital photography and raw image processing. Jeff Schewe, a contributor to the development of Camera Raw from its beginnings, updates Bruce Fraser's bestselling book with inside knowledge of how new features let photographers optimize and convert images for the best results in Adobe Photoshop CS4.

5 out of 5 stars If you need to understand and use Camera RAW, look no further !   January 10, 2010

Probably, the best book out there for understanding and working with RAW images. This book is much more than RAW image processing. You won't get your hands dirty till the mid part of the book. If you really want to understand how RAW works, the first few chapters are helpful, otherwise skip to the details. I can foresee that I'll be revisiting this book more than once.

2 out of 5 stars Painful read   November 30, 2009

Camera Raw

This was a painful read. It is full of mind numbing details to the point that it is hard to get the big picture. For instance, it says "check out the tantalizing morsel in the sidebar "All About Metadata."" Which was not at all tantalizing unless you call the following tantalizing, "Adobe has been assiduous in promoting XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform), an open, extensible, W3C-compliant standard for storing and exchanging metadata." And there's a whole page of this type of "tantalizing morsels".

Then there's the actual organization of the book. Bridge, which is where everything starts isn't covered until chapter 6, it should be chapter 1. The same with workflow, it's chapter 7, which should be chapter 2.

I consider this more of a reference book than anything else.

Some of the most important concepts I came away with are almost obvious but worth repeating:
* Convert all your raw files to DNG so that you can open them 20 years from now. DNG is an open and documented format whereas raw files are proprietary and therefore may not have software to support them later.
* Do you major color corrections in camera raw, and save the fine retouching for Photoshop.
* Make sure you have two copies on separate hard drives before you format your camera's memory card
* Always format your memory card in the camera in which it is going to be used.

Other positives:
* This book is written by two men who are obviously experts on Photoshop and Camera Raw.
* There are times when they sneak in funny one liners like "Someday Photoshop will be a plug-in for Camera Raw."
* There are 7 ½ pages of keyboard shorts cuts, that I did find valuable.

But overall it felt to me like a book for insiders, and highly technical people. But why would someone who knew so much need this book?

Another classic must-have from Bruce Fraser (now deceased), a true guru and Jeff Schewe. Highly Recommended!
